An effective anecdote is short, personal, exciting and adds something to your presentation. This blog provides tips on how to present anecdotes. It can be very effective to tell an anecdote to get the full attention of your audience right away. But when and how exactly to use anecdotes in your presentation? We give you the 4 best tips.
A comical event is not just about getting the laughs. Ultimately, the anecdote must add value to your presentation. So the perfect anecdote really adds something to your presentation. There should be a clear relationship between the anecdote and what you want to present. If you can't think of such an anecdote, don't burn your fingers on it.
No doubt you have heard or read an anecdote that has made you think, "I can use that too". The question is then whether you can always and everywhere get away with it. Especially if you are asked a difficult question, it can be risky. So it is better to only tell about what you have experienced yourself. The more personal the better.
Presenting a personal anecdote is stronger because you take your audience back to the time and place it happened. Of course, this can only be credibly conveyed if it was your own experience.
A good anecdote can be told within two minutes. Preferably even shorter. Can't do that? Then you will tell unnecessary details, or what you want to tell simply isn't suitable for an anecdote. This does not mean that you should throw away that short story. On the contrary, you may find that there is a beautiful detail that you can use perfectly later on in your presentation.
Do you have a reputation for always ending up in the most bizarre situations? If so, your anecdote may well be a little weirder. Otherwise, it is wise to keep your anecdote credible. It is best to tell the anecdote in such a way that your audience can put themselves in your situation. And that is what you want, isn't it? To let your audience experience and feel what you are presenting?
